TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY

We at Impact Orthopaedics are known for our sophisticated diagnostic center and efficient team of orthopedic surgeons.  We take pride in successfully treating a number of patients suffering from orthopedic conditions.

Total Hip Replacement Surgery is a surgical procedure that involves removing arthritis affected hip joints and replacing them with artificial joints made of materials such as metal, plastic, and ceramic. The surgery helps to get relief from pain in the affected area. It improves the mobility of the hip and enables the patient to pursue his daily activities, especially walking without difficulty.

When is Hip Replacement Necessary?

Following are some of the conditions where the doctor might recommend a hip replacement surgery (depending on its severity).

  • Severe Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Bone fracture
  • Perthes’ Disease
  • Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis
  • Osteonecrosis

Based on the symptoms the patient is experiencing, the doctor might recommend diagnostic tests like X-ray, CT scan or MRI to accurately identify the injury or disease the patient is suffering from.  Based on the reports, the doctor will choose a treatment option that best suits the patient.

Types of Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip replacement surgery, also called hip arthroplasty, is generally performed only when the patient:

  • Is in extreme pain and the condition is limiting his capability to perform the daily chores
  • Stiffness in the hip area preventing normal movement of the body; there is no scope for minimal invasive surgery

Based on the condition the patient is suffering from and the severity of the condition, the doctor will recommend one of the following surgeries:

Anterior approach: This approach involves surgery from the front part of the upper thigh. An incision is made on the front of the hip to move the muscles. The damaged joint parts are then cut and replaced with prosthetic material. Finally, the incision is stitched or clipped.

Posterior approach:  In this approach, the incision is made along the outer buttock.  The affected joint of the hip bones are then cut and replaced with prosthetic material.

Hip Preservation Surgery/Hip Arthroscopy: This surgery is performed in the laparoscopic method to remove extra bone formations, loose bodies, damaged cartilage and / or inflamed tissue.

Post Op & Recovery

It takes six to twelve weeks to gauge the actual progress of the healing. Within this period most people resume their normal activities to a large extent.  Physiotherapy can accelerate the process.

However, the following steps can be taken by the patient for a speedy recovery:

  • Adopting a healthy exercise routine
  • Paying and maintaining a compatible diet and weight
  • Blood circulation promoting exercises
  • Daily household chores that improve the normal blood flow after the surgery
