What are the conditions for which a Shoulder surgery would be required

Impingement and Partial Rotator Cuff Tears:   Impingement of shoulders is a condition where the tendons or bursa of the shoulder are impinged. In Partial rotator cuff tears the tendons are torn. These conditions cause extreme pain in the shoulder and make the movement of the arm difficult. In extreme cases, the doctor will recommend a surgery to correct these conditions.

Full-Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears: Full-thickness rotator cuff tears happen because of impingement, heavy lifting, or falls. In some cases, a surgery would be needed to correct this problem. Sometimes, the doctor might recommend an arthroscopic surgery.

Shoulder Instability:  Shoulder instability is a condition where the head of the upper arm bone is forced out of the shoulder socket. This condition is a result of an injury or overuse of the shoulder ligament.

Acromioclavicular Joint Separation: Aacromioclavicular separation is a common injury in children. In cases of severe acromioclavicular joint separation, a surgical repair would be necessary.

Arthritis of the shoulder: When osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis damage the shoulder joint and surrounding tissue, and causes tearing of the rotator cuff,   a surgery would be required.

What are the types of Shoulder Surgeries

There are two basic types of shoulder surgeries based on how they are performed. They are Arthroscopy and Open procedure.

ARTHROSCOPY

In Arthroscopy the orthopaedic surgeon will make a small incision at the joint and insert into it a thin device with a lens attached to it and a lighting system. The lens sends images of the joint to a TV monitor. The doctor will use these images to diagnose the condition. He will then insert some special instruments into the incision to repair the joint.

OPEN SURGERY

In complex cases where arthroscopy might not yield the desired results, an open surgery is performed. In open surgery the surgeon will make incisions of a few inches to reach and repair the affected joints.

RECOVERY

Some of the joint related surgeries require an extensive recovery and rehabilitation support.  Physical therapies accelerate the recovery and rehabilitation process.
