SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT

Impact Orthopaedics is renowned for using start-of-the-art technology in diagnosis and treatment of shoulder impingement.

What is Shoulder impingement syndrome

Shoulder impingement syndrome occurs when there is impingement of tendons in the shoulder from bones of the shoulder. Overhead repeated activity of the shoulder is the primary cause of shoulder impingement syndrome. Such activities include painting, lifting, swimming, tennis, and other overhead sports.

How is Shoulder impingement syndrome diagnosed

Doctors review the medical history of the patient to begin a diagnosis of impingement syndrome. It is also often accompanied by physical examination. Also, x-rays and MRI scans are suggested to rule out arthritis and examine for changes in the bone that indicate injury of the muscle.

What is the treatment procedure for Shoulder impingement syndrome

Oral anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, naproxen, or ibuprofen are the recommended treatment for impingement syndrome. The medicines are usually given for period ranging from six to eight weeks. This is because it takes that much time to fully treat the problem. The response to any given medication differs from person to person. If an anti-inflammatory medication does not help within 10 to 14 days, then it is changed to provide relief. Besides medications, daily stretching in a warm shower is also recommended.

Doctors recommend Cortisone – which is a potent anti-inflammatory medication – if the symptoms persist. On a positive note, however, the impingement syndrome was successfully treated in several cases with a combination of medication and stretching exercises. Also, avoiding repetitive overhead activity can also bring down the impact of impingement syndrome.

Surgery is recommended in extreme instances when medication fails to provide relief. Excessive tear of the tendons might require a surgical intervention. Shoulder impingement surgery is performed as a keyhole (arthroscopic) procedure where incisions are made to insert a small camera and other miniature equipment and reach the shoulder joint. Along with the arthroscope, a sterile solution is pumped to the joint which expands the shoulder joint and aids in performing the procedure effectively.

What are the risks of Shoulder impingement surgery

There are a few risks involved with shoulder impingement surgery. A patient is educated about the risks involved prior to the surgery. These risks include: allergic reactions to medications, Heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, pneumonia, bladder infections and nerve damage. Blood clots can form in the muscles of arms or legs and can travel to the lung. Sometimes, they can be life threatening.
