ROTATOR CUFF TEAR

Impact Orthopaedics successfully treated patients with rotator cuff injuries and is renowned for custom-designed rehabilitation programmes to ensure a speedy recovery.

What is Rotator Cuff Tear

Rotator cuff consists of four muscle joints and tendons that enable a person to rotate the arms and lift weights. A rotator cuff tear occurs due to constant movement during activities that include painting, cleaning windows or repetition of same hand movement. A sudden fall that results on landing on the arm can also cause rotator cuff injury. A rotator cuff tear might be partial or a complete tear. In the former, the tendon on the top of the shoulder is damaged while in a complete tear, the tendon is pulled off the bone.

What are the symptoms of Rotator cuff tear

A rotator cuff tear is identified by pain in the shoulder, inability to lift weights, severe pain while moving the arm and raising the arm above the shoulder level.

Diagnosis

A physical examination of the shoulder is done by doctors to assess the tear. Movement of the knee and directing the patient to perform routine arm actions are some of the physical examinations done by the doctors. After diagnosis, the suggested treatment depends on several factors. These, primarily include the age factor and physical condition of the patient. Surgery is usually recommended after stabilizing the patient through first aid treatment such as applying ice pack or wrapping the arm to decrease swelling. After the swelling subsides through these procedures, a surgery is considered by the doctors.

What are the types of treatment for Rotator cuff tear

Based on the type of tear, a non-surgical or surgical treatment is suggested by the doctors. In the event of a partial tear, doctors recommend a non-surgical therapy-based rehabilitation programme. That includes a combination of medication and physical therapy. The medication includes anti-inflammatory drugs that are aimed to overcome pain and swelling of the shoulder. Doctors might recommend steroid injections into the shoulder, in cases of extreme pain and if the patient is unable to perform his or her routine activities.

In the event of surgical procedures, doctors might stitch together the torn tendons or reattach the tendon to the bone. In such cases, the Arthroscopic procedure is adopted where a small incision is made to the should and a tube with camera attached is passed into the shoulder. Using tiny instruments, the tendons are treated based on the extent of the tear.

Post-operative Rehabilitation

The patient is required to place the injured arm in a sling following surgery for rotator cuff tear. A sling might be required for 4 to 6 weeks based on the assessment by the doctor. Several do’s and don’ts are suggested by a doctor while the arm is placed in a sling. They include moderate movement of elbow and wrist to ensure blood flow and using ice pack for several minutes at a time. Also, doctors might recommend simple arm exercises that can be performed by the patient at home. These exercises are aimed at restoring blood supply to the arm and shoulder and aid in quick recovery.
