PCL INJURY

Impact Orthopaedics is renowned for using start-of-the-art technology in diagnosis, treatment and post-surgery care for all Orthopaedic-related ailments and injuries.

What is PCL Injury

Posterior Cruciate Ligament injury or PCL injury is similar to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury but on a larger scale. This is because, the PCL is larger and stronger than the ACL and connects the thigh bone to the shin bone. Notably, instances of PCL tear are less than 20% when compared to other knee injuries such as ACL and Meniscal tear. However, PCL injury can impact other ligaments and tissues.

Symptoms of PCL Injury

A PCL injury is generally caused by a blow to the knee when it is bent. Such instances occur in car accidents when the knee is in a bent position. Also, falling on hard surface when the knee is in a bent position can cause PCL injury. Rapid swelling of the knee and excruciating pain are some of the early signs of a PCL injury. Pain in the knees while walking, wobbly sensation in the legs and impaired range of motion are the other symptoms of a PCL injury. If left untreated, PCL injury can lead to osteoarthritis in the knee.

Types of PCL Injury

Based on the severity of the injury, the PCL tear is classified into four grades:

Grade I: The PCL has a partial tear.

Grade II: The ligament is loose and partially torn.

Grade III: The ligament is completely torn rendering the knee unstable.

Grade IV: The PCL and any other another ligament is damaged.

Diagnosis of PCL Injury

Doctors tend to opt for physical examination of the knee to assess the extent of the injury prior to recommending x-ray or MRI scan. Swelling, movement of the knee and directing the patient to perform routine knee actions are some of the physical examinations done by the doctors. The patient is told to lie on his back with the knee bent. Any abnormal knee movement when pressed against the upper shin indicates a PCL injury. Doctors also use an arthrometer device to test the ligament’s tightness and assess the injury. Doctors may also suggest x-ray or MRI scan for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Treatment and Surgery

After diagnosis, the suggested treatment depends on several factors. These, primarily include the age factor and physical condition of the patient. Surgery is usually recommended after stabilizing
