MENISCAL TEAR

Impact Orthopaedics is equipped with highly skilled and experienced doctors who pool-in their knowledge in the treatment of orthopaedic-related ailments and injuries such as Meniscal Tear.

What is Meniscal Tear

Menisci are the soft cartilage that acts as a cushion between the femur and tibia and supports the knee. They provide stability and lubrication to the knee joint during walking and running when force is exerted by the body weight.

The Meniscal tear is one of the most common forms of knee injury as it is easily susceptible to wear and tear during movement of the knees. While athletics report more instances of such an injury, the injury is also common during daily routine activities. People in all age groups are prone to meniscus tear while adults suffer from chronic and degenerative tears.

Symptoms of Meniscal Tear

The symptoms of Meniscal tear are evident from the swelling of the knees and their restricted movement. Difficulty in fully straightening the knee and impaired range of motion are the other symptoms of the tear.

Diagnosis

A physical examination of the knee is done by doctors to assess the tear. Swelling, movement of the knee and directing the patient to perform routine knee actions are some of the physical examinations done by the doctors. However, since the tear is very common and easily confused with other forms of knee injury, doctors may also suggest x-ray or MRI scan for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Treatment and surgery

After diagnosis, the suggested treatment depends on several factors. These, primarily include the age factor and physical condition of the patient. Surgery is usually recommended after stabilizing the patient through first aid treatment. They include applying ice pack to the knee, wrapping the knee to decrease swelling and resting the leg in an elevated position above the heart level. After the swelling subsides through these procedures, a surgery is considered by the doctors.

Two types of surgical procedures are taken into account for treating Meniscal Tear. They are: Partial Meniscectomy and Meniscal Repair. The former type of surgical procedure is used to areas of meniscus where there is no blood supply. An incision is made to the knee and instruments are inserted to trim torn pieces of meniscus. In the Meniscal Repair procedure, instruments are inserted into the knee through an incision to clean portions of Meniscus that are rich in blood supply
