Identification or diagnosis of ACL Tear

The ACL tear is usually identified by swelling of the knees, buckling of the knee during daily activities and specific movements that increase the pain or swelling. Besides, these apparent indications, doctors may also recommend, x-ray, Ultrasound or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan for an accurate diagnosis of the injury.

Surgery for ACL Tear

Prior to surgery, based on the extent of the injury, first aid is provided and that is followed by braces to the knee. However, in certain instances doctors suggest physical therapy to treat the knee.

Doctors recommend surgery for ACL tear only in extreme instances where more than one ligament is torn or the patient wants to return to active sports. During the surgery, doctors replace the torn ligament with a tendon grafted from the patient’s own body or from a deceased donor. Following the surgery, a rehabilitation time table is prepared by the doctors based on the condition of the patient, the extent of injury and how fast the patient intends to return to active duty.

Rehabilitation – Post Surgery

Patients can resume their daily activities following a ACL tear if it is accompanied by a rigorous rehabilitation programme. Although there is no fixed time for the injured to make a complete recovery, a timeframe of one year is considered ideal. The rehabilitation programmes are scheduled for a lengthy duration in order to restore the stability of the knee and also to prevent the chances of reinjury.

Role of physical therapist

The role of physical therapist is implicit in all forms of knee injury including ACL tear. If a patient wants to avoid surgery, a detailed physical therapy treatment is designed to treat the knee. In some instances, physical therapy is recommended prior to a surgery to decrease the swelling in the knee and also to strengthen the thigh muscles. Also, physical therapy programmes are designed to help the patient regain full weigh bearing capacity of the knees. In cases where doctors suggest braces to restrict the movement of knees, the physical therapist designs therapy programme that helps in making a recovery without laying excess stress on the injured knee.
